Under 14 Girls
Dr Crokes 2-15 ISG 3-2
Our U14 girls finished off a tremendous year with a very good win against ISG (Kenmare District) in Div 2A of the East Kerry League, which was played last Monday evening in the Fitzgerald Stadium. In what was a fantastic team performance, Captain Pia Hickey led from the front, kicking 1-4 on the night.
Our girls started brightly, with early points coming from Leah McMahon, Katie McCarthy, & Pia. However, when substitute Sadhbh Stack made a great run to make herself available and finished to the net with about 5 mins left in the first half, it was just the boost that the girls needed - they went in at half time ups by 8 points. Pia, Leah, Katie & Laura O'Shea all added good scores in the second half, as well as a fine point from Siofra Randles who had made a great run from the '45.
However, it was certainly a game when our super six backs blocked, challenged and chased every ball. Led by our rock solid full back, Teagan O'Sullivan, and Sinead Oliver who was our player of the match on the night from centre back, the Kenmare girls just could not find a way through to get themselves back in the game.
Team & Scorers: Natalia Maj, Grainne Byrne, Teagan O'Sullivan, Jocelyn Hickey, Ali O'Donoghue, Sinéad Oliver, Ella Bartlett, Laura O'Shea (0-1), Pia Hickey (1-4), Siofra Randles (0-1), Katie McCarthy (0-3), Cara O'Sullivan, Clodagh McGorrian, Leah McMahon (0-6), Natalia Iglieska. Subs: Amy Clifford, Sadhbh Stack (1-0), Ella Rose Barrett, Saoirse O'Sullivan, Selina Thawiset-Collins, Keira Geaney.
This panel of girls have only lost 2 games since they started out on their journey last March. As well as this victory, they also won the County League Div 3 Final. The pinnacle of the year however, was when they represented Kerry brilliantly in Galway in June, in the National Féile competition. They only lost out narrowly to the eventual winners Górt na Móna of Antrim at the semi final stages. We are looking forward to seeing what the future holds for this talented bunch.
Under 12 Girls
The Clubs Under 12 girls finished up their season by capturing the East Kerry Div 4 Cup. After winning all three games in their group, the girls qualified for a home venue in the cup final.
Their opponents on the night were I.S.G., against whom they had a couple of points to spare during their earlier game in the league.
But as often happens in sport, the second meeting of the teams was a much closer match.
The Crokes girls were dealt a blow before a ball was throw in when it emerged that their star goalkeeper Natalia Mai was sick and unable to line out for this final. Luckly, two of the teams outstanding players, Aoileann Ní Dhubhán and Annie Brosnan volunteered to play a half each between the posts and it was to be the makings of the team, because both girls did a fantastic job.
The game was a very entertaining affair, both teams evenly matched and traded score for score throughout the first half. Sisters, Jocelyn and Sabra Hickey and Keela and Miren O Connor starred all through, as did Sinead Byrne,Ella Bartlett and Norah McGlynn .All the girls defended with great determination, and it was because of them that the teams were level at half-time.
But the forwards were not to be out-done and worked their socks off in both halves, none more so than team captain Clodagh McGorrigan and Síofra Randles, each scoring a goal to push the team into the lead.
In the full -forward line both Ellie Green and Emma Dowling caused untold trouble for their markers and kept the opposing goalkeeper constantly busy.
Johnny Buckley from the senior team would have been chuffed to see both Amelie and Sophie Hussey playing so well in the final, which they eventually won on the shoreline Dr Crokes 2 -05 ; I.S.G.1 -07.
Clodagh Finn, Jessica O Connor, Ellen Cudden and Alana O' Brien all played during the league but were unable to play in the final.
The team mentors Megan Kiely, Alan McGorrigan and Pádraig O'Shea were so delighted for the girls after all the effort that they made for the competition and they are very grateful to the moms and dads who were so supportive of the girls throughout the year.
